In Sydney pedestrians share a common ground to cyclists; They aren't catered
for, it takes forever to be able to legally cross a road in this city
without j-walking, our sidewalks are too narrow and all the light sequences
are timed around maximising the flow of motor vehicles at the pedestrians

Tokyo seemed to cater for pedestrians and short distance cyclists very well.

Traffic light sequences should allow pedestrians to cross at a minimum of
every second sequence change. Left turn arrows currently compromise
pedestrian/cyclist safety. Creating scramble crossings at intersections that
have a large volume of human traffic discourages j/walking by allowing
pedestrians to cross diagonally in one change of light sequence (instead of
expecting them wait for a minimum of two); furthermore If crossings
legitimately become shared zones like they are in Tokyo, cyclists will be
able to give way to pedestrians then proceed straight ahead; this gives
cyclists a clear run away from dangers created by sharing the left lane with
motor vehicles; less competing with impatient bus drivers trying to pull
into their bus stop, with taxi drivers trying to find their next fare, or
with motorists trying to beat others to the next car park.
