$2,000 award offered for information about bicyclist's death

WBTV, June 9, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte group is offering a
$1,000 reward for information about a hit and run accident which killed a
bicyclist last month, and this amount is in addition to $1,000 reward offered
by Crime Stoppers.

Edward Hedrick III, 29, was killed Sunday, May 1, while
bicycling with two other friends on Poindexter
  Drive.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department,
Hedrick fell from his bike before reaching Lawndale Road.

While Hedrick's friends were trying to remove him from the
roadway, a vehicle came down Poindexter
Drive towards South Boulevard and struck him.

The two friends told police they tried to alert the car
about Hedrick being in the road, but the driver did not slow down. Hedrick was
pronounced dead at the scene around 6 a.m.

Recently, Hedrick's mother, Joni Webster, spoke with WBTV
about her son's death.

"The person responsible for this really needs to come
forward," Webster said. "It amazes me that someone can live with this
knowledge and not be completely torn up inside."

Hedrick grew up in Cumberland,
Maryland, and prior to moving to Charlotte in January, he was a bicycle courier in New York City. He was
staying with Webster while he was in Charlotte.
She says he was one week away from moving back to New York when the accident happened.

According to the CMPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit, the
car which hit Hedrick is described as a 4-door older model, silver or
light-blue colored vehicle. Police said it is possibly a Toyota similar to a Tercel or Corolla.

Police said the vehicle likely has minor damage to the
front-end and undercarriage.

The Charlotte Area Bicycle Alliance announced Wednesday it
is contributing $1,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the
hit and run driver.

Anyone who has information will also be eligible for an
additional award of up to $1,000 from Crime Stoppers. Their number is
704-334-1600.
