Suspended sentence for pistol-packing politician

By Political Pest
A former union leader and Socialist-appointed government
commissioner was given a suspended jail sentence for illegal possession of
firearms stemming from an incident in which he brandished a pistol in downtown
Budapest and threatened to shoot a bicyclist. The highly-publicized altercation
took place back in 2007 when JánosVadász (left, looking pretty severe) was
driving down Andrássyút.  At a stoplight
a bicycle courier leaned onto the car and then reportedly hit it with his palm.
One thing led to another, until Vadász whipped out his weapon.
Vadász, who in court said he didn’t remember where he’d
bought the gun, claimed he had pulled it on the bicyclist because he felt his
life was being threatened. The court seemed to agree, as the cyclist also got a
(suspended) jail sentence, while both were ordered to pay costs in excess of
HUF 100,000. And yes, “Vadász” in Hungarian means “hunter.” []
