I heard it told that a security guard asking to hold your ID while you are in a building is illegal. It is along the lines of identity theft. This is for a standard office building, not a municipal or federal building.

Does anyone know the specific law or rules about this matter in the USA? I dislike security guards and have lost an ID in the past because of "building policy".
